Getting closer to Ngan and trying to win her heart, Brian intrigues with his uncle to take a mailman job instead to disguise his character. And from there, they became more than just colleagues. As so often happens in times of need, friendships are forged. After Brian pretends to be Ngan's beau on a visit her family and then secretly helps Ngan rework her project, they are each surprised at the intimacy of the days they have spent working and the impact their encounter brings: warmth, sadness, laughter, wit, and often, wisdom. They're falling madly in love, and Brian has to return to Vietnam to get married to Ngan. It is a happy ending when Ngan immigrates to America at last. Brian gains a different insight about the fate that God has created. Having Ngan in his life, it is as if God had brought Jennies's life back on earth to reunite with him. This makes Brian stop believing in the tears that he had been crying for his former wife, and Brian learns along the way the meaning of true love and, ultimately, what fate really is.
